Euro 2012 Results – Greece 1 – 0 Russia

Greece started the game the stronger of the two sides and had the first real chance of the game from a karagounis corner, brings a good save from malafeev. Minutes later the Russians have a decent chance with Dzagoev forcing a decent save from the Greek Goalkeeper.

Midway through the half time the Russian are piling on the pressure when Kerzakov has an excellent chance smashing a ball just wide. Dzagoev has another chance just after but squanders the opportunity. Russia have had more of the possession in this half and certainly more of the chances, but greece are still dangerous.

There is then a slight lul in the match, 5 minutes before half time Greece come more into the match putting together a nice attack which Samaras squanders. Then there it is! in the dying moments of the first half Greece captain Karagounis puts them into the lead and into a position in the Quarter-finals of Euro 2012. A fine effort struck low and hard that works its way under the Malafeev in the Russian goal. What a time to score to as the final whistle goes.

The second half starts with Russia on top with Denisov just shooting wide of the goal, Russia have definately come of the blocks here after conceding late in the first half. Greece have a chance though with Torisidis crossing really well only for it to be blocked expertly by the russian defence.

A few minutes late Greece go forward again this time its the goal scorer Karagounis who goes down in the area, a great shout for a penalty, it should have been a penalty but Karagounis is booked for Diving a Really poor decision by the referee.

Saltinguinis goes through but is taken down just outside the area for a Greek free-kick. The free-kick was taken really well and it hits the crossbar, Russia are desperately lucky their that that wasn’t another goal for Greece.

Russia seem to be lacking some inspiration here, but Arshavin puts in a good ball across the goal with Dzagoev heading just wide nearing the end of the game. Russia are piling forward now, really trying to score a goal and stay in the competition but their effort are fruitless, a Decent game and scenes of jubilation from Greece and my god does that country need some joy. Well done to Greece nobody saw them qualifying.
